Cape Town winelovers elect their favourites

Vrede en Lust made it into the Top-10 of the RMB WineX Cape Town 2008 Best of Show awards for both the red and white wine categories! This testifies to a great job done in the cellar by Susan and her team, in the vineyards by Etienne and his team and at WineX itself by my wife Anneke and her team!

MEDIA RELEASE – RMB WINEX CAPE TOWN BEST WINE ON SHOW AWARDS 2008

Cape Town winelovers once again honoured their favourite wines by voting for them in the Best Wine on Show ballot which was conducted at the sixth annual RMB WineX held recently in the Mother City. Twenty four wines made it to the top ten rankings with Hamilton Russell Vineyards and Diemersfontein leading the way for white and red wines respectively and Rudera and Lindhorst in second place.

In what is widely regarded as the most credible consumer wine poll, the RMB WineX Best Wine on Show Awards recognise and reward the country’s top wines offered for sampling at the show.

The winning wines were:
Best White Wine on Show: Hamilton Russell Chardonnay 2005 (2006 vintage 2nd place at RMB WineX Cape Town 2007 and 1st place RMB WineX Johannesburg 2007)

Commented Michael Fridjhon, director of WineX: “Visitors to RMB WineX Cape Town have shown great consistency over the years in their choice of the top wines at the show. Their focus on wines with an established reputation has frequently been noted – though it was interesting to observe how these results also reflect recent wine show trends.

“The appearance of Nederburg in the Top Ten rankings following the winery’s success at the Trophy Wine Show and the Shiraz Challenge is an indication that consumers who attended RMB WineX in Cape Town this year concurred with those judging panels.

“The continued presence of Hamilton Russell, Meerlust, De Toren, Jordan, Cape Point Vineyards, Springfield, Steenberg, Cabrière, Glen Carlou and Ernie Els is a reflection both the performance of those wineries and the fidelity of Cape Town winelovers.”

RMB WineX Cape Town took place from 10 to 12 September at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and was attended by 8 500 visitors over the three days. Around R275 000 in wine sales was generated through WineX’s retail facility – Shop@Show – for the 180 exhibitors, most of whom participated in the retail facility. The four day RMB WineX Johannesburg takes place from 28 to 31 October at the Sandton Convention Centre.
