We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Ansone (pronounced An-so-nay) Fourie as our first full-time, assistant winemaker! Ansone is busy completing her second harvest at Vrede en Lust. She graduated with a B.Agric (with Cellar technology) from Elsenburg, Stellenbosch in 2006.
She worked her first harvest after graduation at Simonsvlei, followed by some time at a boutique winery in Paarl before jetting off to work the Napa harvest at Sutter Home Winery. She returned to the Cape for the 2008 harvest at Vrede en Lust and continued on to Wither Hills in Marlborough, New Zealand.
Ansone spent the Bordeaux 2008 harvest at Clos de Jacobins, a Grand Cru Classe winery in St Emilion, France, where she worked at Harvest Assistant Winemaker. She is a sporty extrovert and has worked very well with Susan.
We have expanded our production in 2009 and Susan felt that Ansone would be able to add significant value across a number of fronts at Vrede en Lust. Outside of the harvest season, you may find Ansone helping in the tasting room or with cellar tours too!
This photo was taken at an experimental batch of Cabernet Sauvignon undergoing a natural yeast, punchdown, ferment in small 225L French oak barrels.
I had the pleasure of tasting their 2009 Sauvignon Blanc blend yesterday and was blown away! The wine is 100% Elgin grapes, with 7.5% of our Casey’s Ridge Semillon added. It has the most amazing bouquet with a great balance between tropical fruits and minerality. It will get to spend the next 6 weeks on the lees and then get readied for bottling in June. I am sure it will fly out of the cellar – like the 07′s and 08′s have.
We are really fortunate to have such a great combination in the winery and I am sure they will prove to be a winning team. Welcome aboard Ansone!
