Meet the Vrede en Lust Harvest 2010 team! Nearly 7 days into the harvest they have already crushed 83 tons!
Ansone Fourie, Susan Erasmus, Natalee Hamilton, Ben Snyman, Baron Willemse, Etienne Buys with some Pinotage destined for Rose tipping into the receiving bin
Susan is of course the Vrede en Lust winemaker (South Africa’s women winemaker of the year for 2007). Ansone is Susan’s full-time assistant winemaker, completing her 3rd harvest at Vrede en Lust. Baron is one of 2 cellar assistants (Melvin August was out on the tractor at the time of the photo). Etienne oversees all of the vineyards and harvest time is crunch time for his team too!
Natalee completed her BSc in viticulture and winemaking at the University of Stellenbosch in 2007. Since then she has been busy racking up harvests – in the Cape, Sonoma, Marlborough and Bordeaux.
Ben completed his BSc in viticulture and winemaking at the University of Stellenbosch at the end of last year. He worked at Boschendal prior to coming to Vrede en Lust for Vintage 2010.
We expect to crush just over 660 tons at the Vrede en Lust winery this harvest. By the time our cellar expansion project is fully complete in time for harvest 2011, we should crush 750 tons. Of the 660 tons we will crush in 2010, we will use about half for Vrede en Lust wines, with the rest sold as bulk wines.
Susan runs the winery with a small team throughout the year. Adding young winemakers for the harvest helps her team cope with the massive spike in workload from the beginning of February until the end of April.
In addition to lots of hard labour, the young winemakers bring new ideas, experiences and perspectives to the cellar. It is great to experience the harvest buzz as it starts building up a head of steam!
