We have just released 3 new wines for summer 2011/2012. This includes new 2011 vintages of the Sauvignon Blanc from our Casey’s Ridge vineyard in Elgin and the new Viognier from Simonsberg-Paarl. In addition, we are proud to introduce a brand new wine, the Vrede en Lust White Mischief 2011 also from our Elgin vineyards!
The wines are all available for tasting at our cellar door and for delivery to South African addresses via our local eStore. Our WineClub members would already received their new wines with their November shipment.
I think these are 3 outstanding wines and shows the improvements Susan, Ansone and Etienne and their teams are constantly making in the vineyards and in the cellar! The grapes for these wines all went through the new automatic grape sorting machine and we believe the quality jump is significant. Well done team and thanks for your great efforts this year!
The White Mischief is a 5 cultivar white blend made from selected grapes from our cool climate Casey’s Ridge Elgin vineyard. The name comes from Susan and Ansone literally playing around with the white wines from Elgin and coming up with this unique blend!
The components of the blend may differ slightly from vintage to vintage, as some cultivars will show better than others in different years. The same mischievous style will however be maintained. The 2011 is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Viognier.
Citrus, floral and tropical notes on the nose are followed with hints of white pear and fruit salad on the palate. Soft, beautifully balanced mouth-feel. Pairs well with a variety of dishes. The grapes were hand harvested and crushed in February and March. The juice was settled in stainless steel tanks. Fermented mainly in stainless steel. Post fermentation, the wine was aged on lees and the separate components blended before bottling. The wine was bottled under Stelvin and cork closures.
The 2011 Sauvignon Blanc showcases the expression of fruit from our vineyards in Elgin. The vineyards are aged between 5-6 years and every year we are more excited about the quality of the fruit from our Casey’s Ridge property. The grapes were picked at full ripeness and the juice was fermented with different yeast strains in stainless steel tanks. The wine spent 5 months on the lees ahead of bottling in late September. The result is a vivid, rich Sauvignon Blanc with an excellent nose and palate.
Our Sauvignon Blanc shows typical cooler climate aromas with flint (think wet gravel!) notes, passion fruit and gooseberry. The wine is perfectly balanced with fresh acidity, rich minerality and a crisp, yet smooth finish.
Our goal with the Vrede en Lust Sauvignon Blanc is for a wine with elegance, balance and richness. The grapes were harvested at different sugar levels late in February up until mid March. The juice was fermented separately and blended post fermentation. The wine was bottled under Stelvin closure to ensure optimal freshness and no cork-taint!
Susan won the South African Woman Winemaker of the year award with her 2007 Viognier. The 2011 Viognier Simonsberg-Paarl may be the best one yet! A very expressive Viognier with typical apricot and peach flavours. Full bodied and delicately balanced with oak. The wine has an off dry level of residual sugar to compliment the full body, which follows through onto the palate.
The grapes were crushed in February and the juice was settled in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation took place in 225 l new French and Hungarian oak barrels, as well as in stainless steel tanks. Post fermentation, the wine was aged on the lees for a few months in 225 l oak barrels
Fantastic food wine complimenting a wide variety of spicy Thai / Asian / curry dishes. Also goes well with cheese dishes, pasta and richer seafood. Definitely a conversation wine!
