After months of secrecy and hustling and bustling to get everything ready for the opening of the brand new restaurant, Lust is now open for business!
At the heart of Lust Bistro & Bakery is a hearth: the traditional, wood-fired brick oven where Jean Pierre Smith conjures up authentic artisan breads and all manner of delectable daily fare.
Located on the beautiful Vrede en Lust wine estate, on the picturesque outskirts of Franschhoek, Lust is open for early breakfasts, late lunches and everything else in between.
The food is honest, abundant and delicious with an emphasis on simplicity and seasonal ingredients. The décor is modern and earthy, industrial loft meets farmhouse kitchen. Choose from the àla carte menu or daily blackboard specials – and don’t forget to pick up something fresh from the bakery counter to take home.
Early birds will be greeted with the mingled aromas of Jean Pierre’s hand-rolled, all-butter croissants and freshly brewed Terbodore coffee – and will be spoilt for choice between breakfast favourites such as homemade granola and Eggs Benedict (made with free-range farm eggs, of course) or more indulgent morning treats like American buttermilk pancakes with fresh strawberries and bitter-chocolate-and-honey sauce. Simply put, Lust offers the best breakfasts in the winelands.
Bistro style, the lunchtime chalkboard changes daily, depending on what’s in season and what the weather calls for. But you will always find Jean Pierre’s famously mouth-watering lamb burger on herbed ciabatta with avocado pâté and caramelised onions on the menu, as well as rustic dishes such as duck rillettes on toasted sourdough and pan-friend polenta with wild mushrooms, Gorgonzola and pine nuts. The cheese and charcuterie platters, laden with delicious South African produce and Lust’s artisan breads, are heavenly. And all dishes are beautifully completed with Vrede en Lust’s excellent range of wines.
Booking is essential for Lust’s Sunday Buffet lunch where Jean Pierre takes the hearth oven through its paces with a selection of slow cooked roasts.
Free Wi-Fi makes Lust a great spot to conduct a business meeting, or to spend the afternoon working off site with your laptop. If it feels like a home from home, it’s probably because the family kitchen in the original Vrede en Lust farmhouse inspired the décor.
Pop in for an early bird breakfast or a late morning coffee, grab a light snack or linger over a bistro lunch and discover why Lust is set to become Franschhoek’s favourite place to meet and eat.
