This wine has become a firm favourite in the line-up of Vrede en Lust wines, and for the Mocholate fans, and all the wine lovers, here is a short summary of the beginning of this beauty, and where we are now!
In 2008 Susan Erasmus, our Winemaker, kept a small 2800 liter tank separate of the Malbec, from our 2ha block on the farm. Up until 2008, the Malbec had only been used in our Bordeaux blend in a more serious styled production. We released the 2008 Malbec in our Tasting Room, and it sold out like lightning. Due to this success, we brought the Mocholate Malbec in to our portfolio, and the first official release of this was in 2009. At the 2010 Old Mutual Wine Show, the Mocholate walked away with the trophy for Unusual Red Varietal, Malbec on the show. It was also voted the top Red Wine at the annual JHB Winex that year.
Since 2010 we’ve sold out on the Mocholate Malbec so quickly, that there has hardly been enough volume to enter the wine into competitions on an annual basis.
The 2011 and 2012 vintages were smaller productions than previous years, due to lower yields and vintage differences in the Vineyard, therefore in order to keep up with the supply and demand of our customers, (or cult following Mocholate drinkers) we planted an additional 3ha of Malbec in 2011, and the first 5 tons were harvested from the block this season.
The 2013 showcase the abundant Red Cherry and fruit aromas with hints of chocolate and Mocha. An aromatic wine with silky smooth tannins and a vibrant palate.
Do not wait to taste and purchase this wine as it is usually sold out before we can even blink. This wine is now also available at our new restaurant on-site, Lust, and will pair beautifully with their amazing Lamb Burger.
Our Makro supporters will also be able to purchase the new release from their local stores or you can email firstname.lastname@example.org for direct orders and delivery to your doorstep.
