The Vrede en Lust annual Harvest Festival

On the 2nd of March we celebrated our annual harvest festival with the most perfect weather we could wish for. The harvest festival is an exclusive event held annually to thank our wine club members for their continued support throughout the year. This year was no exception and with a very long waiting list of guests who wanted to join us for the day we made sure we pulled out all the stops. Our theme for this year was “A trip around the world” and each table represented a different country. Early in the morning guests were treated to our Vryersvoet hike through the vineyards where they were welcomed by four different wine tasting stations on-route. Each station presented a wine tasting and our ladies in red made sure the tired, but excited hikers were entertained all the way. After the hike our guests could enjoy some grape stomping to their hearts extend, and some even attempted a few dancing moves in the stomping bins.

Lunch was a 6-course lavish affair which also represented food from different countries and wines to compliment the dishes. Anneke and Tobi Jooste were our hosts for the day and Tobi’s beautiful voice and Anneke’s funny antics kept our guests entertained throughout lunch.

It was a wonderful, blessed day and all the staff from Vrede en Lust left tired, but with big smiles on their faces after such a successful day. This year has certainly inspired us to go even bigger and better next year and we have new and exciting ideas up our sleeves.

As most of you will know, Vrede en Lust has one of the most amazing and popular wedding venues in the country – even if we may say so ourselves. This time of the year wedding season is in full swing and young couples are either getting engaged, are busy planning their wedding or getting married. Everyone has a bit of a hop and a skip in their walk and feel ready to fall in love. For those who have long been married and have no interest to read about beautiful dresses, jaw-dropping views and pretty flowers… feel free to head on over to the wine section here.

Let’s be honest… this time of year no one is really in the mood to read anything or learn anything new. Instead of boring you with details about all the photographic opportunities on the estate, boutique accommodation for most of your guests, award-winning wines, our amazing venue and super professional and friendly hospitality staff to name a few things… I am just going to make this post a feast for the eyes:) I even created a mood board with images from Pinterest to showcase a few beautiful ideas to incorporate into your wedding.

Summer is here and Cotage Fromage has decided to open its doors for clients on Friday nights. This will however be done with a twist and a treat and guests will be able to enjoy an authentic, special braai menu which will only be available on Friday nights at Cotage Fromage. What is better than still doing your Friday night braai ritual without actually having to do the work and meanwhile listening to some live background music?

Parents with children are also more than welcome as they will be able to relax while the young ones are well looked after by our onsite nanny and the added bonus of a jumping castle.

Think pink for breast cancer

Vrede en Lust, Curves and Pink Lady are all very passionate about raising awareness for breast cancer. In aid of the very worthy cause a 5 km hike was organised to raise funds. This wonderful event was supported by 75 energetic hikers on Sunday, 28 October, who enjoyed the magnificent beauty of Vrede en Lust. Hikers were treated to a scenic tour of the Vrede en Lust estate and afterwards awarded for their efforts with a few delicious snacks.

This year the event was open to a small amount of people who are directly involved with Curves, Pink Lady and Vrede en Lust but rest assured that next year will be much bigger and open to the public in order for anyone who would like to support the day, to join in the fun!

A much more ‘French’ Bastille this year

Franschhoek Wine Valley, our local tourism organization, has concluded some very interesting twinning agreements in recent years. Under CEO Jenny Prinsloo’s watch we have reached twinning agreements with Napa Valley (USA of course) and with the Rhône-Alpes Region in France.

To help celebrate a Season of France and the twinning between the Rhône-Alpes Region, there are 10 winemaker coming down from France to participate in Bastille, along with their top wines, to help take Bastille a few notches up! We expect a few top French chefs as well.

The 2012 Bastille festival will start on Friday the 13th of July with some technical wine tastings for the Vignerons de Franschhoek. The goal of course, is learning and working together, in order to raise the standard of all wines produced by members. There will be some more tastings in the afternoon and a VIP event for local media, government officials and dignitaries held at La Motte in the evening. The public side of Bastille will be held over the 14th and the 15th of July.

Vrede en Lust and Cotage Fromage will both have a stand in the main Food and Wine marquee and two of our wines will be included in the tutored tastings. The winery will of course be open during the weekend so those wishing a more relaxed breakfast on the way in to Franschhoek, coffee on the way back or even a tasting of the full range! We have some accommodation available but early booking is essential!

There will be some special tutored tastings held by the French winemakers on Saturday and Sunday mornings at grand Provence, ahead of the rest of daily activities. In addition to the top Rhone wines, there will be a selection of the best of Franschhoek’s wines included and the selection will be different each day. These tastings will cost R395 per person and tickets are on sale at Webtickets. Due to limit seating, early reservations will be essential, so please dont snooze if you are a wine lover!

In addition to the normal Bastille Food & Wine Marquee (access at R150 per person per day), there will also be a VIP Marquee this year, featuring the French winemakers, their wines and the top Rhone style wines from the Vignerons de Franschhoek. There will also be some relaxing areas, a food platter and access to the Food & Wine marque. Access to the VIP marquee will cost R395 per person per day and is limited to only 200 tickets per day. Early booking is going to be essential, via Webtickets!

The good news, is that the wines showcases by the French winemakers will also be available for sale at the festival! New this year will also be a hall featuring a larger range of French products, including top imported cheeses, champagnes etc. A great reason to plan a weekend in the beautiful Franschhoek wine valley!

We invite you to join us at the annual Vrede en Lust ‘De Savoye Harvest Festival’ on Saturday 3 March 2012. On De Savoye Day, we celebrate the 2012 grape harvest; honour the founder of Vrede en Lust; release a number of new wines and have a lot of fun!

This year we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the new winery and 324 years of passion, since Jacques de Savoye founded Vrede en Lust in 1688!

There are only 120 tickets available and a number of last year’s guests have already applied for bookings, so please book soonest to avoid disappointment.

The Harvest Festival is one of the highlights on our calendar! Those who want to harvest some grapes themselves, will be able to get into the vineyards with Etienne & Susan earlier in the morning – just come prepared with a change of clothes.

Wines to be released

The Boet Erasmus 2009, the Syrah 2009, and Caseys’ Ridge Elgin Viognier 2011. In addition, the 4 wines that make up the exclusive and limited release Artisan Range will be available for tasting and purchase to all guests. These wines are normally only available to Wine Club members: The Chenin-Chardonnay-Viognier 2010 (Elgin), the Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Simonsberg-Paarl), The Barrique Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (Elgin) and the newly releases Syrah 2010 from our Elgin vineyards.
