Vrede en Lust – Simonsberg-Paarl
Vrede en Lust is a 55Ha farm with about 36Ha currently under vine. We recently planted a 1.5Ha lot of olives and planted a 3 Ha block of Grenache in 2009.
The estate is a long, narrow piece of land that runs up from the R45 road, that connects Paarl and Franschhoek, up some 2.5km to the slopes of the famous Simonsberg mountain. We have many different slopes on the estate – some facing south, others east, others north and others west.
The Simonsberg mountain is home to many of the Cape’s leading wineries, including Plaisir de Merle, Thelema, Tokara, Boschendal, Rustenburg, Morgenhof, Kanonkop, Uitkyk, Anura, Glen Carlou, Backsberg and Rupert de Rothschild.
Ricton – Simonsberg-Paarl
Ricton is a more recent purchase and lies only 2km from Vrede en Lust across the road from Backberg and Babylonstoren. It is a 173Ha property with more than 40Ha under vine at present and with capacity to plant another 60Ha in the future.
The Ricton soils are a very uniform, sandy form of decomposed granite on top of clay. The soils are very well drained and the vineyards are fairly flat, with a slight slope dropping down to the Berg river and the east.
Casey’s Ridge – Elgin
Casey’s Ridge is a 90Ha former apple orchard that we purchased in 2005. We removed 60Ha of apple orchards and have planted well over 40Ha of vineyard to date.
Casey’s Ridge possesses some exceptional indigenous fynbos and fauna. It is located in the Kogelberg Biosphere, the first UNESCO proclaimed biosphere in Africa. It is located about an hour’s drive from Vrede en Lust in the cool Elgin region. Its soils are very different to the granite based soils of Vrede en Lust and Ricton.
